Your First Reformer Pilates Class in Davie, FL: What to Expect

Published October 10, 2026 · FS8 Davie · Davie, Florida

The short version: you will be on a machine you have never used, in a small group, with a trainer who assumes you have never done this before — because most people walking in for the first time have not. Nothing is tested, nothing is counted out loud against anyone else, and the equipment adjusts to you rather than the other way round. What follows is what actually happens, so the unfamiliar part is only the machine and not the whole experience.

What is a reformer, and what does it actually do?

A reformer is a low, bed-like frame with a platform — the carriage — that slides along it on rails, attached to springs. You lie, sit, kneel or stand on it and push or pull against those springs with your legs or arms. The spring load is what sets the difficulty.

That single detail is why the machine works for a room with mixed experience. Because the frame carries your body weight and the springs can be dialled up or down, the same exercise can be made easier or harder without changing the movement. A first-timer and someone in their third year do the same exercise at different loads, and neither is holding the other back. It also means you are not fighting gravity to stay in position, which is the part that usually makes floor work hard for people coming back from a sedentary stretch.

Do you need any experience?

No. Never been on a reformer? Never been to a yoga class? First-timers are very welcome at FS8 Davie. The classes are designed for you to go at your own pace, and the trainers walk you through the equipment, the exercises and the proper technique every step of the way.

In practice that means the trainer sets you up before the class starts, shows you how the springs change, and corrects your form during the session rather than after it. Form being corrected out loud is normal and happens to everyone in the room, not just the new person.

What does the class feel like while it is happening?

Low-impact and hard are not opposites. FS8 exercises are designed to minimise the impact on your joints, but that does not mean you will not need a sweat towel — the classes are low on impact and high on sweat.

The sensation is different from a class built on jumping or running. There is no landing, no pounding and very little noise, and the burn tends to be precise: one area at a time, held long enough that you notice exactly which muscle is doing the work. Every class works the whole body, some through large compound movements and others body part by body part.

Soreness in places you did not expect — the sides of your abdomen, your inner thighs, the small muscles around your shoulder blades — is the normal first-week experience. It is the stabilising muscles that resistance work finds and most workouts skip.

What happens if you have an injury?

Get clearance from your medical practitioner first. That order matters and it is not a formality: the studio asks for professional advice before you train, not after.

Once you have been cleared to exercise, tell the instructor before the class starts, so exercises can be modified for your injury and your fitness level. The reformer makes that easier than most equipment does — changing the spring load or the position usually handles it without taking you out of the exercise.

Which class should a first-timer book?

FS8 Davie runs three class styles, and they differ in emphasis rather than in format: FS8 Original for building a foundation, FS8 Ignite for adding resistance and power, and ReformX for an exclusive focus on reformer work. If the reformer is the part you came for, ReformX is the most direct answer; if you want the foundation first, FS8 Original is. There is a longer breakdown of all three in Reformer Pilates in Davie, FL: the three class styles.

If you are still deciding between Pilates and yoga as disciplines rather than between class styles, that comparison is in Pilates or Yoga in Davie, FL: which one should you pick? — including the straight answer that FS8 Davie blends yoga-inspired movement into every class rather than running a standalone yoga class.

Where the studio is

FS8 Davie is at 6310 Griffin Rd, Unit 103, Davie, FL 33314, and also serves Cooper City, Southwest Ranches and Plantation. Phone (954) 282-5065, email davie@fs8studio.com. The unit number matters: the studio is in Unit 103.

How to book a first class

There is a 1 Week Intro offer for first-time visitors: unlimited classes for one week for $49, bought on this site. The package expires 7 days from first use.

One week of unlimited classes is also the honest way to judge a reformer studio. A single class tells you whether you liked the trainer. A week tells you whether the second class felt better than the first — which is the part that decides whether you keep going.
